Preview of IPL match between Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings at Delhi

Suneer Chowdhary - 18 Mar 2010

The Delhi Daredevils will host the Chennai Super Kings at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi for the 11th match of the third edition of the IPL. Delhi have won two of their three games so far, whereas Chennai has triumphed in one out of the two matches they have played.

Delhi will be plagued by a huge issue as their captain Gautam Gambhir could miss out on the game due to a hamstring pull. There is a good chance that he will be replaced by either an Indian, or Dave Warner (3/1 at Stan James) could come in his place and one of the other foreign players could be replaced by an Indian like a Yogesh Nagar.

Virender Sehwag (5/2 at Stan James) had tried his best in the previous game to chase down the humongous 200-plus score, but for Delhi to succeed without the presence of Gambhir, it will need one of Sehwag and T Dilshan (10/3 at Stan James) to bat through the entire length of the innings.

As compared to that, the Super Kings are even more badly hit. Their captain, top batsman and a wicket-keeper, all rolled in one, MS Dhoni is bound to miss the game due to an elbow injury. This will allow Suresh Raina (7/2 at Stan James) to take up the mantle of captaincy and Parthiv Patel could end up being the wicket-keeper. That also means that there will be added pressure on the top-order – Matt Hayden (5/2 at Stan James) and Murali Vijay (4/1 at Stan James) – to give them a solid start.

With Dhoni out of the way, the Super Kings will also expect a lot from Albie Morkel (14/1 at Stan James), the batsman, who can hit the long blows at the end of the innings. What needs to be seen is whether he can survive at the crease after hitting a couple out of the park, much like what he had done in the first game against Deccan Chargers.

To me, Delhi (4/6 at Stan James) look to have the wherewithal to go the distance in the game despite the absence of Gambhir and that has to do with their stronger bowling. Chennai (6/5 at Stan James), to me, look like they will not only miss a wicket-taking bowler at the start of the innings, but also a captain who can command some respect from his side.

Tips:
Favourites: Delhi Daredevils (4/6 at Stan James)
Top Delhi batsman: Virender Sehwag (5/2 at Stan James)
Top Chennai batsman: Suresh Raina (7/2 at Stan James)
