Gautam Gambhir returned to the Indian Premier League in the game for the Delhi Daredevils against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Feroz Shah Kotla.
Gambhir had earlier missed three successive games due to a hamstring injury that he had sustained in the match against the Mumbai Indians.
Gambhir had featured in the first two games of the IPL and hit a match-winning half century as well. However, in the Mumbai game, he injured his hamstring while chasing the ball very early in the game and did not field for the rest of the match and nor did he bat.
He then went to Sri Lanka to get his hamstring treated by an ayurvedic doctor, a decision that did not go down too well with BCCI. Immediately on return, he seemed to have rubbed the wrong way of BCCI again by writing in his column, something to the effect of ‘international cricket is much bigger than IPL and hence, players will require rest during the tournament for the ICC World T20 to follow’
Gambhir scored only one run before being given out lbw off the bowling off Charl Langeveldt.
Delhi is currently with six points off as many games, and despite being down the points table is the third favourite at 5/1 (Bet Fred) to win the tournament. Mumbai Indians are favourites to win the tournament, with Bet Fred offering 9/4 for their win.
Amongst the players, both Sachin Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis are favourites (35/25 at Betfair) to win the Orange Cap, an award given to the batsman who ends with the most number of runs at the end of the tournament. Having missed out on the three games, Gambhir is at 75/1 (Betfair) to end as the tournament's best batsman.
